The University of Houston International Merit Scholarship is a highly competitive scholarship program designed to attract outstanding international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Houston in the United States. The scholarship covers tuition and fees, room and board, and other related expenses for up to four years of undergraduate study or up to two years of graduate study.

Benefits

The International Merit Scholarship is available to all undergraduate and graduate students who meet the eligibility requirements. The scholarship provides a reduction in the total cost of attendance, ranging from $3000 to $10,000, for two semesters. International students on F-1 and J-1 visas will receive the residency tuition rate. However, the scholarship only covers tuition and fees and does not cover other expenses such as housing, meals, transportation, personal expenses, books, supplies, or health insurance. The scholarship can only be used to study at UHV, and the awards and waivers are available for fall recipients for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The scholarship also includes the $1000 guaranteed scholarship for students living on-campus.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be an admitted student to UHV
  2. Must be registered for a minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate students and 9 credits for graduate students at UHV at the time of award
  3. Returning/current students must have at least two semesters remaining to graduate, and the scholarship cannot be applied to the final semester
  4. Returning/current undergraduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, while graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  5. Approval for volunteer opportunities must be obtained in advance
  6. Spring scholarship recipients must reapply for the fall merit scholarship before the deadline, if applicable
  7. Must be an international student or a student on a non-immigrant visa status, including F-1 and J-1 students
  8. F-1 and J-1 students must have the relevant visa status on or before the state date of their immigration document and attend the mandatory International Student orientation at Victoria or Katy
  9. All non-immigrant status students must be in good academic and immigration status
  10. Must have a proven track record of academic achievement.
